An Interview with Independent Hip-Hop Artist Nyck Khayo

[RLM] I remember when you were working on Planet Andromeda; what was your headspace back then compared to now?

I would say back then I was in an unaware headspace but now I’m in a more aware headspace. I feel like I have all the tools I need to do what I want to do. I’m less stressed for sure. And now just living and more relaxed and at peace with myself.

[RLM] What’s something you want your listeners to walk away with after hearing your music?

I’m hoping that people walk away with a connection and shared vibe. Almost like a shared vision of how we see things in life.

[RLM] Since I’ve known you, you’ve always had that mix of humility and fire. How do you keep that balance in a scene that feeds ego?

Thank you. I feel like you almost have to be humble and willing to look at something in a different way in order to grow into the best artist that you possibly can. I’ve definitely had to check my ego at times working in the studio. I really take myself out of it and focus on what’s best for the creative.

[RLM] Where do you see the underground scene headed right now—are we in a renaissance or still fighting for respect?

I really see us continuing to put pressure on the majors even more. With more genre bending, think Houston Trill/West coast sounds, less commercial sounds, more unique packed house shows and more social community events. We have our respect as being the most creative, but the battle everyone fights for is for attention and emotion. California is really a vibe out there that’s always been a part of the renaissance with all the Pink Sifu’s and The Alchemists of the world. The cool part now is I can do it right here in Dallas first and then build a homebase for my music in different cities and countries.

[RLM] If hip hop is the new scripture, what verse are you trying to write into it?

Honestly, a lot of my inspiration for writing poetry comes from reading the Bible. So, to a degree my verses are scripture verses.

[RLM] Who’s someone you’d love to get in the booth with? Unground or mainstream. Or both.

Yea definitely would love to work with Lord Apex, The Alchemist, Evidence, Earl Sweatshirt, DJ Muggs, Navy Blue, Curren$y, Ab Soul, J Cole, Vince Staples, DJ Premier and Kendrick Lamar. As many of my favorite artists as possible,
